The world will witness a historic cultural milestone with the celebration of the First Ever World Sarangi Day 2025, dedicated to the sacred memory of the legendary sarangi maestro Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab, one of India’s greatest exponents of the instrument and a towering figure in Indian classical music.

Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab holds a unique place in the history of independent India. On the midnight of 15th August 1947, at the moment India attained freedom, he performed “Vande Mataram” on the sarangi, creating an eternal musical tribute to the birth of the nation. This extraordinary moment symbolized the soul of India resonating through the sarangi, making his contribution both artistic and historic.

World Sarangi Day 2025 is being organized to honor his unparalleled legacy and to celebrate the sarangi as a global cultural instrument. The initiative is led by Ustad Kamal Sabri, internationally renowned sarangi maestro, President of Saurang Sangeet Society, and son of Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab. Carrying forward a 400-year-old Moradabad Gharana legacy, Ustad Kamal Sabri has dedicated his life to preserving, innovating, and globalizing the sarangi.

The event is co-organized by Mr. Vimal Srivastava, Managing Director of Ignite Media and Entertainment Ltd., whose vision and leadership aim to amplify India’s cultural heritage on a global platform.

As part of World Sarangi Day 2025, Ustad Sabri Khan Memorial Awards will be presented to outstanding personalities who have made immense contributions to the promotion of Indian Classical Music, Arts, and Culture. These awards will recognize lifelong dedication, artistic excellence, and significant impact in preserving and promoting India’s cultural legacy.

World Sarangi Day 2025 will bring together musicians, scholars, cultural institutions, and audiences worldwide to celebrate the sarangi’s rich heritage, its evolution, and its continuing relevance. The day aspires to become an annual global observance, honoring the instrument that has voiced India’s deepest emotions for centuries.

This historic initiative stands as a tribute not only to Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab, but also to India’s enduring musical soul—uniting tradition, freedom, and global cultural harmony through the timeless voice of the sarangi.

Esteemed Awardees – World Sarangi Day 2025

As part of World Sarangi Day 2025, the Ustad Sabri Khan Memorial Awards will honor distinguished personalities whose lifelong dedication and outstanding contributions have significantly enriched Indian Classical Music, Arts, and Culture at national and global levels.

The Lifetime Achievement Awards will be conferred upon legendary vocalist Pt. L. K. Pandit, renowned for his profound contribution to Hindustani classical music; tabla legend and Khalifa of the Farrukhabad Gharana, Ustad Sabir Khan, for preserving and advancing one of India’s most prestigious percussion traditions; and Dr. Kiran Seth, Founder of SPIC MACAY, whose visionary efforts have brought Indian classical arts to millions of young minds across India and abroad.

The Cultural Excellence Award will be presented to acclaimed filmmaker Mr. Virendra Mishra for his meaningful cinematic contributions to Indian culture. The Global Cultural Excellence Award will be bestowed upon Ms. Sanjana Jon for her international cultural initiatives, while the Global Cultural Ambassador Award will honor Mr. Reuben Gauci, Hon’ble Ambassador of Malta to India, for his exceptional role in strengthening cultural ties between nations.

The program will feature special music performances by Ustad Kamal Sabri, who will present “Vande Mataram” as a tribute to the historic rendition by his father at the moment of India’s independence. He will also perform select Indian classical compositions dedicated to the memory of Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab, as well as to Janab Gulfam Sabri, the younger son of Ustad Sabri Khan Sahab, honoring their enduring musical legacy.
